We have conducted a series of STEAM classes at HKUGAC, focusing on STEAM education and introducing students to maker culture. Our objective was to utilize digital fabrication tools to create memorabilia for HKUGAC’s 20th anniversary.
Throughout the first semester, we familiarized students with various digital fabrication machines and software, equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to design and construct their own memorabilia in the future. Here’s a summary of the classes we offered last year.
1) 3D Printing Induction and Snowflake ball
The students learned to operate a 3D printer and explored its post-production process with the making of a Snowflake Ball ornament. Which also serves as an example to understand Platonic Solids, deepening their appreciation for mathematics.
This experience fostered curiosity about the intersection of mathematics and art, enhancing both their technical skills and respect for mathematical principles.

2) Moulding: Jesmonite and Vacuum Forming
The students discovered various moulding manufacturing processes by engaging in hands-on activities. They tried cast moulding with Jesmonite and experienced vacuum forming using the Mayku FormBox. Throughout the sessions, they had the opportunity to create personalized phone stands, allowing them to gain firsthand experience in the techniques.
As a culmination of their learning, students crafted personalized phone stands. This project allowed them to apply the skills they had acquired from both moulding processes. They took pride in their creations, which not only served a functional purpose but also reflected their individual creativity.


3) Paper Cutting: Silhouette Portrait Induction
During the workshop, students learned to operate the Silhouette Portrait 4, a digital paper cutting machine that made manufacturing detailed designs easy. They experienced firsthand how technology could assist and enhance their creative processes.
Students engaged with various functions of the machine, experimenting with its capabilities. The hands-on experience of creating greeting cards and stickers not only familiarized them with the machine but also inspired them to explore new design possibilities.
By the end of the session, students had produced a range of personalized items, showcasing their newfound skills and the potential of the Silhouette Portrait 4. We hope the experience left them excited about the intersection of technology and creativity, eager to apply what they had learned in future projects.



4) Digital drawing: Inkscape Induction
The students experienced digital drawing and the creation of multilayered designs. They learned basic yet powerful commands that aided their design processes in Inkscape. In addition, they discovered how to cut and apply vinyl, a versatile art material.


5) Heat Pressing: HTV and Sublimation Ink
By designing and decorating their own tote bags, students learned about the manufacturing process of heat pressing HTV and Sublimation Ink. Tips and precautions for operating a heat press were shared, allowing them to approach the task with greater confidence.
To experience the new frontier of technology, students were also encouraged to create images for their designs using generative AI, which sparked their creativity and provided them with new tools for expression.



6) Mechanism
The students explored the basics of the mechanical system by designing linkage systems and gear systems. They were inspired to create movable and interactive art pieces.
Using Linkage software, they drew and simulated their mechanical systems, studying their movements and learning about useful design concepts for mechanisms.
In our extension session, students turnt the designs into physical mechanisms. They created cut file for the parts from the simulation for further manufacturing and studied limitations when translating from design to physical objects through hands-on assembly process.
